Back in 2017 we published an article: What Every Parent Needs to Know About the Updated Instagram. To this day, it stands as our most popular article reaching over 550,000 people. Parents are rising up in bravery and making informed decisions about how their children engage online – this is great!
In the time since its publication, Instagram grew to over 1 billion users. Important to note, however, 80 percent of Instagram users come from outside the United States. The amount of daily users resides around 300 million and 95 million photos and videos are uploaded per day. It is easy to see that people worldwide have made Instagram a habit, a business, and an addiction.
We have heard from many brave parents who, after learning more about Instagram’s influence, have chose to withhold access to Instagram until a later age. Some have even reversed their approval of the app after open discussions with their children and the impact it has had.
What has encouraged us the most however, is the response from TEENS themselves. At live events with students, several have deleted their accounts during the workshops. Others were motivated to make their accounts private and stop posting selfies. They admit the affect and power of influence Instagram has over them changes their character.
Unfortunately, educating ourselves on Instagram (or any social media app) isn’t a once and done job. Instagram is always updating and evolving in order to make more money and gain more souls, so we must stay updated as well. Maybe your child was in middle school when you read the last article and now they are in high school. Is now the right time to allow it? Furthermore, what are you role modeling as a parent on Instagram?
